Imagine waking up to the serene views of the Italian Riviera, where waves roll near charming coastal villages, and the air carries the history of the region. Join me as we take a journey not just through places, but through the very heart of Italy’s coast. We’ll take a virtual stroll through some of the treasures you can discover in Liguria’s beautiful coast.
Let’s begin in Genoa, the illustrious maritime gateway of the Ligurian Sea, where evidence of its past remains in its narrow alleyways and grand piazzas. Picture wandering through the city’s heart, the centro storico, which is like a living maze of carrugi (tiny alleyways,) medieval architecture, bustling cafes, and the aroma of fresh pesto – Genoa’s gift to the culinary world. The city’s historic palaces, like the Rolli Palaces, now a UNESCO World Heritage site, offer a glimpse of the former luxurious life of Genoese aristocrats.
Where Elegance Meets the Sea. In Santa Margherita Ligure you’ll find yourself lost in colorful lanes, where every corner reveals a story, and around every turn you find an invitation to experience La Dolce Vita.
Moving on to Portofino, a true jewel perched on the Italian coastline, where pastel houses and luxury yachts paint a scene so picturesque, it seems sprung from an artist’s canvas. Imagine sipping on a glass of local wine, indulging in a leisurely lunch at a shaded waterfront restaurant while the Mediterranean sun dances on the water. Behind them is the backdrop of the Portofino Regional Park, where adventure waits for those inclined to hike and seek out panoramic views.
Then there’s the fabled string of five ancient fishing villages, Cinque Terre – a true kaleidescope of color and rustic charm. Here you can walk the pathways connecting Monterosso to Riomaggiore, each village perched on their hillsides a masterpiece of human ingenuity blended with nature. Here you can enjoy the simple delights of Ligurian cuisine, perhaps a plateful of fresh seafood or the signature focaccia di Recco, all while gazing out at terraced vineyards and the Tyrrhenian Sea. These are best experienced from your private boat as you glide along the coast or during shoulder season when there are fewer tourists. But there’s a reason these villages are so popular. They are GORGEOUS!
As we continue, the scenic towns of Rapallo and Chiavari await with local experiences that awaken the senses. Learn the art of pesto making from the region that made it famous, and wander the markets where tradition meets taste. These towns are not just stops on our journey but immersive experiences into Italian culture and craftsmanship with respected local chefs and craftspeople. We visit local small businesses, so our tourism dollars have a real impact on the communities we visit. And we go gently in small groups so nobody is overwhelmed by our presence. And the best part is, we get to really know the PEOPLE. And you know what I’m going to say… It’s all about the people. When we get home from vacation, we remember how we FELT while we were there. And how we feel is largely based on the way the people we meet make us feel while we’re there. When you travel with me, you really get to know the place and the people there. You get to feel a part of something special, and maybe even make new friends in far away places!
The picturesque fishing village of Camogli may be overlooked by some, but is cherished by those who know. It’s one of my personal favorite little seaside towns. Every bit as beautiful as the famous Cinque Terre but without the throngs of tourists.
